A wedding with a cause: How Adam and Jenny transformed tradition into purpose

When Jenny Applequist was diagnosed with a myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) in 2019, it marked the beginning of a transformative journey. “I felt a flood of emotions when I was first diagnosed,” Jenny shared. “I was still in denial for years.” Over time, however, Jenny’s perspective shifted. “The diagnosis has made me a more courageous person, and it has brought meaningful perspective to my life.”

This last November, when Jenny exchanged vows with her partner Adam Kost, their wedding was more than just a celebration of their partnership — it was an inspired act of generosity at a time when many focus on themselves. The couple, determined to make an impact, asked their guests to forgo traditional gifts. Instead, family and loved ones were directed to the MPN Research Foundation’s website.

Seeing an opportunity, the couple made the unique decision to tie their special day to a cause they deeply cared about. “MPN research is so important to us, and we thought that our wedding would be a great platform to raise awareness,” the newlyweds explained. MPN Research Foundation is the only organization solely dedicated to advancing research for MPNs, making it the perfect choice for Jenny and Adam’s goals.

Working with the MPN Research Foundation, they created a custom donation link and included it in their registry, for a straightforward and stress-free process. The response to the risky, non-traditional approach to their nuptials was overwhelmingly positive. “Many of our guests reached out to share that they loved the idea and were eager to support,” the happy couple reported.

In the end, Adam and Jenny’s efforts raised over $12,000 for MPN research. Beyond an event, the wedding became a testament to their family and friends’ generosity and willingness to support the happy couple’s dreams. And for the pair, the experience was more than just a fundraising milestone. “It felt very personal to raise the money with their support. I think this experience has made us more open about Jenny’s MPN diagnosis and eager to continue raising awareness.”

The funds raised in honor of Jenny and Adam’s new bond will go toward advancing research projects dedicated to unraveling the mysteries around MPNs.

Their story serves as an inspiring reminder of how special occasions can become a force for good. As Jenny and Adam put it, “Thinking outside the box to raise awareness can have a meaningful impact. The money our guests raised for MPNRF will always be a special part of our wedding celebration.”
